Becoming a Referee

Becoming a Referee with Mount Pearl Soccer Association

*Information provided in partnership with the Newfoundland Soccer Association.

What is Required to Become a Referee?

The NLSA provides two options to get you started as a referee, the small-sided course, and the entry-level course.

The small-sided course is open to those aged 12-16 and deals only with refereeing “small-sided” games - from 7 to 9/side, with no offside law applied. This course DOES NOT qualify you to referee 11/side games or to act as an assistant referee. If you don’t have a strong background in soccer or want to try refereeing at a lower level before fully committing, this is the course for you.

The entry-level course is open to those aged 14 and older and QUALIFIES successful candidates to referee 11/side games anywhere in Canada, and to act as an assistant referee. Current or former players are encouraged to take this course rather than the small-sided course, but it is also designed for those who do not play.

We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting 2 referee courses this year:

  • Small-Sided Course - APRIL 13, 2024 - $45 per participant.

  • Entry-level course - JUNE 8, 2024 - $100 per participant.

If you have already completed the small-sided referee course, you DO NOT need to participate in it again.

If you are aged 14 or older and interested in refereeing 11/side games or acting as an assistant referee, you must complete the Entry-level Course.

The courses will be held at the Soccer Hut, located at 44 Arena Rd (Off of Smallwood Dr.).

To register for the course, please submit the following FORM.

Submit payment via EMT to officemanager@mpsa.ca - Please include the participant's name along with the name of the course in the e-transfer.

The duration of the courses will be from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

All participants will be expected to stay for the entire duration of the course, so please ensure they have a snack and lunch with them as we are asking they DO NOT leave for lunch.

All participants will be provided with a whistle, we do however ask that they all bring paper and a pen with them. There will also be an outside component so please dress accordingly.

For more information please contact our Officials Director - Shannon Tobin - at officialsdirector@mpsa.ca.

*Please be advised that there are a limited number of seats for this course.
